Why not to visit Maropeng in the Cradle of Human Kind

It is customary to take a short break from the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg life by retiring to the countryside for a bit a fresh air and access to clear view of the stars away from the smog that cover most of the city of gold. For some, this can only be a far distant place or the somewhere along the coast. Before you pack up for the long trip that will leave you more tired than it is worth, it is apt to explore places closer to Johannesburg. For this traveller, Magaliesburg is the destination of choice. What with the reputation as the Cradle of Humankind and home to some of Gauteng’s finest 5-star country lodges and hotels. It is with great anticipation that I set off to the Maropeng Hotel for a long awaited weekend away from it all. The hotel is situated smack bang in the Cradle of Humankind and is a gem of an establishment that truly deserves its 4-star grading.

All round service from the friendly staff is truly world-class. The check-in process is swift, professional and I am accompanied my room where am treated to a meticulous explanation of the facilities and amenities available at the hotel. The room is very well appointed with all the necessary amenities as can be expected from an establishment of such high calibre. The only drawback is the size of the TV – a bit too small for my liking and not in keeping with the opulence of the room. If, however, the in-room entertainment is not an important factor for you then the hotel scores full marks for in-room facilities.

The décor is absolutely fabulous and the views of the Swartberg Mountains from my room are majestic as they are astounding. If it is tranquillity you are after, the hotel has this in bucket loads. Atruly amazing experience!Even a quick and customary check of the cleanliness of the room’s facilities comes out tops with nothing to complain about! This is one mean feat for this discerning and demanding customer.

The three-course affair is a culinary delight and very well presented. Compliments to the chef, Sisa, who prepared the most succulent pork chops I have tasted in a long while. The entrée vegetable soup is light, sublime and a joy to eat for an avowed carnivore. The chocolate mud pudding was a delightful cap to the evening washed down with a glass of merlot. No request of the customary Tabasco sauce from this traveller to spice up the meal or it would spoil the taste experience! The following morning breakfast was equally beautiful and tasted the best omelettes I have had in a long time. A nice encore to the dinner the night before! I was mightily impressed by the hotel and would definitely recommend it to any of my friends or associates looking for a beautiful, quiet and a gem of an establishment for a quick getaway from the Johannesburg fast-paced and hectic life. Pity that the hotel was not as busy as I would have liked to do a proper experience appraisal as this is usually when the wheels come off the rails with most establishments. My luck I guess! I would like to revisit the hotel on a busier weekend to reappraise the high levels of service. Maropeng Hotel - Take a bow!
